in this debate. we forget sometimes because we talk about how mitt romney is down in the race but he's still got a chance. only down 3 points nationally in the journal/nbc poll. in key swing points he's pulling even in florida, down 1, closer in virginia, down 2, he's still down by 8 percentage points in our poll in the state of ohio, which is a problem for this reason. look at the map of swing states. if you look at the ones where mitt romney is running within 4 points of president obama, places like florida, virginia, iowa, missouri where he's ahead, north carolina where he's even or ahead, you add all those to the solid states for mitt montana and the leaning states for mitt romney, he's still only at 263 electorate votes. he needs to bring ohio or other swe swing state, nevada, new hampshire. he's got an unparallel opportunity tonight to come on stage with the president of the united states and make his case, larry. >> john, the wall street journal poll and others have shown that romney has closed the gap a little pit with president obama at least nationwide and some of the sw

, bye. >> did mitt romney's post debate victory hit a speed bump with the unemployment rate? we'll break down what the numbers mean. this is special report. good evening, i'm bret baier. president obama is hailing the jobs report, showing a drop from 8.1% to 7.8, as a sign the country has come too far to turn back now. his republican challenger says the new numbers are not the sign of a true recovery, in fact, he says they're telling a far different story. the government's household survey says that 873,000 people entered the work force. but the employer survey found 114,000 new jobs created, 10,000 of those in government. so, the difference, about 760,000 are apparently not full-time stable jobs, what's known as the real unemployment mark, the unemployed and those too discouraged to look for work remains unchanged at 14.7%. white house correspondent wendell goler begins our coverage of the report and the spin. >> two days after a disappointing debate with mitt romney, president obama looked on the bright side of a merely modest jobs report for september. >> this morning, we found

debate. the president actually spoke for a little more than four minutes more than mitt romney spoke, 42:50 for the president. 38:32 for mitt romney. a pretty good night for mitt romney. expectations were so much higher for the president that he would come out swinging, but mitt romney clearly held his own, and all of the various issues, they went back and forth. we didn't hear some of the attack lines from the president, so many of us were expecting he would be making. neve heard him mention anything about the 47%, the controversial remark that mitt romney made in boca raton in a closed-door fund-raiser, didn't get him into the history at bain capital, exporting jobs. none of the issues of tax returns. spoke about the most important issues, economy, jobs, and all of what's going on. we're going to watch a scientific poll that we're doing right now to get the reaction of what going on, and we're going to see what that scientific poll says about who won this debate. we also had a focus group watching of independent voters, undecided voters who were there watching what was going

debate between governor romney of massachusetts and president obama. you see both men being greeted by their wives on stage. even this portion of the debate is negotiated ahead of time by the campaigns in terms of which members of their family will be joining them on stage. this is, these these are negotiated down to this level of detail. in terms of how the overall debate unfolded, i personally do not know who won this debate. i do feel that we saw this debate format die a very painful death on camera tonight. the contrast between the candidates was stylistic as much as substantive. president obama i think calm and basically explanatory tonight. governor romney, more hyper, and i don't mean that in a negative way, just sort of more amped, more assertive. and that manifests in a way that the debate format was just dismantled. the format and i think the moderator, with all due respect to mr. lehrer dismantled. this is one of those debates, you could predict the score more by time of possession in terms of who was speaking more. then you could by any other individual plays. let me bring
